This work is a monograph on the Illyrians as seen through their contacts with the Greek world. The aim is to approach the history of Illyrian populations from a frontier history perspective, and to this end, to reinterpret all available documentation with no Hellenocentrism or ideological preconceptions, seeking to identify the vectors of interculturality. The first part of the book defines the geographical and chronological outlines of the subject. The second part examines the places, vectors, occasions of contact and nature of exchanges – in other words, the factors of acculturation. Once this basis is set, the final section analyzes the transformations observed in all areas of socio-cultural life. Contacts between the Greek and native populations are structured around two key periods: first, the colonial settlement, which led to a Hellenization referred to as “vertical”, affecting only the elite; then, the unification within the kingdom of Pyrrhus, with a “horizontal” Hellenization, closely linked to urbanization and to the development of middle classes, represented by merchants and craftsmen.
