Die Parallelbiographien Plutarchs wurden haufig als Vergleichstexte fur die Evangelien des Neuen Testaments herangezogen. Wie aber sollte ein solcher Vergleich methodisch und hermeneutisch angelegt sein? David A. Staub entwickelt in dieser Studie einen methodologisch umsichtigen Ansatz fur die komparative Textanalyse, indem er beispielhaft das Lukasevangelium mit Plutarchs Leben Numas vergleicht. Nach einer kritischen Sichtung der Gattungsforschung erlautert der Autor methodische Grundlagen fur interkulturelle Textvergleiche. Fur die Analyse zentral ist dabei die narrative Darstellung gottlichen Wirkens: Wahrend Lukas Jesu Wirken als Offenbarung gottlichen Wohlwollens prasentiert, entfaltet Plutarch die Figur des Numa als eine heilbringende Selbstoffenbarung des Gottlichen. Eine Reflexion des Verhaltnisses von Mythos und Geschichte beschliessen den Band.
