English summary: In this work, Manfred Ullman first examines and clarifies the syntax and the semantics of three Arabic particles on the basis of extensive documentary evidence from classical Arabic literature. He then offers an investigation of the precative perfect form in terms of contextual conditions. The author then turns his attention to the particular methodology by which the fragmentary survivals of Old Arabic poetry should be edited. The motif-historical study connects this work to the early research which Thomas Bauer conducted concerning the onager and Ullmann’s own earlier work concerning the wolf. In the concluding chapter, 140 short poems and epigrams are edited and translated, in which the bucket-wheel, which is still employed in Syria and Mesopotamia, is portrayed, offering a particularly appealing chapter about ekphrastic literature. With extensive indices, in which personal names as well as words have been complied, the contents of the book are also thoroughly presented.
