Die nahezu 500 Briefe, die der Sanskritist Otto Bohtlingk (1815?1904) zwischen 1852 und 1885 an seinen Kollegen Rudolf Roth (1821?1895) in Tubingen schrieb, wurden vor einigen Jahren von G. Zeller in Roths Nachlass in der Tubinger Universitatsbibliothek aufgefunden und werden hier erstmals veroffentlicht. Hauptthema ist das sog. “Petersburger Worterbuch”, das grosse, bis heute weltweit massgebliche Worterbuch Sanskrit-Deutsch, das zwischen 1855 und 1875 von Bohtlingk und Roth publiziert wurde. Es stellt das bedeutendste Gemeinschaftsprojekt der europaischen Indienforschung im 19. Jahrhundert dar. Angestossen und hauptverantwortlich durchgefuhrt wurde es von Bohtlingk als Mitglied der kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Sankt Petersburg, die auch die Finanzierung ubernahm. Bohtlingk bezog Gelehrte aus ganz Europa und daruber hinaus ein. Die Briefe des vorliegenden Bandes machen es moglich, Arbeitsweise und Organisation, wissenschaftliche Prinzipien und Kommunikationsstrukturen dieses Grossprojekts uber einen Zeitraum von mehreren Jahrzehnten zu verfolgen und zu analysieren. Die Quellen, die sich ohne Rucksicht auf Dritte zu Sachen und Personen, Schulbildungen und konkurrierenden Unternehmungen aussern, gewahren einen aufschlussreichen Blick hinter die Kulissen des Wissenschaftsbetriebs und des Gelehrtenlebens, werfen neues Licht auf die publizierten Ergebnisse und dokumentieren Konstitutionsprozesse des dominanten europaischen historisch-philologischen Diskurses im 19. Jahrhundert.
