“How could it have happened that Christianity and man have come so far apart?” This was Leonhard Ragaz’s lament as early as 1900, and empirical studies show the same today: Men are less active in church life than women and have a higher tendency to leave the church. But does the – often polemically used – catchphrase “feminization of religion” do justice to this phenomenon? How has the much-discussed “gender gap in religion” developed historically? What theological motives played a role in this? And how do Protestant men think and feel today – religiously, but also in everyday life? The study explores these questions by examining the interaction between constructs of masculinity and religiosity and their consequences for men’s relationship to the church today. In addition to historical-theological and sociological assessments, it explores initial perspectives for action for church development and gender policy. Auch heute zeigen empirische Untersuchungen: Manner sind im Gemeindeleben weniger aktiv als Frauen und haben eine hohere Neigung zum Kirchenaustritt. Doch wird das – oft polemisch gebrauchte – Schlagwort einer “Feminisierung von Religion” diesem Phanomen gerecht? Wie hat sich der viel diskutierte “Gender Gap in Religion” historisch entwickelt? Welche theologischen Motive spielten dabei eine Rolle? Und wie ticken protestantische Manner heute – religios, aber auch alltagsweltlich und politisch? Die Studie geht diesen Fragen nach, indem sie die Wechselwirkung von Mannlichkeitskonstrukten und Religiositat in ihren Konsequenzen fur den gegenwartigen Kirchenbezug von Mannern und ihre Haltung zu Fragen der Gleichstellung untersucht. Neben historisch-theologischen und soziologischen Bestandaufnahmen lotet sie erste Handlungsperspektiven fur Kirchenentwicklung und Geschlechterpolitik aus.
