English summary: The Byzantine Iconoclasm has influenced many iconoclastic movements which have used the destruction of images as a political statement. However, it has been largely misunderstood. Through an analysis of the way icons became so important, who opposed them, and how the dispute was resolved between 680 and 850, this book shows that the dispute over images was more complicated and more interesting than previously imagined. Tuttavia, esso e stato sfortunatamente frainteso: questo libro mostra quanto e perche la discussione riguardo alle immagini fosse piu complicata e piu interessante di quanto non si sia immaginato. Osserva il modo in cui le icone divennero cosi importanti, chi vi si oppose e come la controversia si risolse all’incirca tra il 680 e l’850. Molte convinzioni ormai largamente accettate riguardo all'”iconoclasmo” – ad esempio il fatto che si trattasse di un’iniziativa imperiale e della causa di una generale e diffusa distruzione di immagini, che i maggiori promotori della venerazione delle icone fossero monaci e che fosse avvenuto in un periodo di ristagno culturale – si riveleranno sbagliate. Gli anni dei dibattiti sulle immagini videro infatti progressi tecnologici e mutamenti intellettuali che, accanto ad un’economia in crescita, si conclusero con l’emergere di un impero particolarmente forte e stabile: la Bisanzio medievale.
