Review - French L'abbe Gregoire passe generalement pour un homme des Lumieres, heritier lointain du mouvement encyclopedique, acteur important de la Revolution francaise, promoteur infatigable de l'emancipation des Juifs et des Noirs, artisan, au sein du Comite d'instruction publique, de la plupart des reformes culturelles qui nous regissent encore. Ce document, jusque-la inedit, devoile en fait une personnalite beaucoup plus complexe. Non seulement Gregoire adherait a la theologie janseniste la plus pure, mais celle-ci inspirait ses engagements politiques les plus radicaux. Comment peut-on s'affirmer, a la fois, fervent disciple de Jansenius et ardent apotre de la democratie ? Cette etude nous fait vivre cette grande et enigmatique tension.
