Le probleme d’un monde cree sans commencement ou, comme on le dit ordinairement, de l’eternite du monde , a ete l’occasion d’une vive controverse entre les penseurs latins du XIIIe siecle, dont saint Thomas d’Aquin. Nonobstant sa foi averee en une creation avec un commencement, ce dernier s’est en effet interroge tout au long de sa carriere, et dans des textes assez amples : Aurait-il ete possible que Dieu creat un monde sans commencement? . Une telle perseverance est suffisamment paradoxale pour attirer l’attention, surtout que Thomas, en sa doctrine sur ce point, s’opposait a la majorite de ses contemporains. Et cette reflexion philosophique possede une actualite d’autant plus grande qu’on s’interroge aujourd’hui, notamment au plan scientifique, sur l’age de l’univers. Apres une breve exposition des arguments et des raisonnements de Thomas sur la question, ainsi que des sources ou il a puise, sont donc presentes les douze textes thomasiens traitant de la duree du monde, en une traduction francaise originale. Une bibliographie selective complete cet ensemble.
