Les signes repertories par les auteurs anciens a propos des premiers princes de Rome ont souvent ete regardes comme des motifs recreatifs dans des uvres litteraires par ailleurs serieuses, ou comme les traces d’une soif un peu puerile de surnaturel. Une reflexion historique permet de considerer pour eux-memes les signes -presages, prodiges- identifies comme tels par les Anciens, de les replacer dans leur contexte, d’essayer de comprendre leur impact sur ceux qui en colportaient les recits et ceux qui en etaient les cibles.
