By (author) R. Bélanger Sarrazin

Today, the corpus of Coptic magical texts consists of over 500 manuscripts, mostly dated to Late-Antique and medieval Egypt (4th-12th centuries). It examines the syncretistic processes used by the ritual experts of these periods to appropriate ancient deities, narratives, and images, adapt them and incorporate them into magical texts containing Christian elements. This study thus sheds light upon the transmission of magic knowledge in Antiquity and the process of religious transformation in Late Antiquity and the medieval period.
