Montaigne cependant reinvente la figure de Socrate, en la debarrassant des scories metaphysiques dont elle etait revetue, pour en faire un modele d'humanite. Il repense aussi sa demarche et en tire une nouvelle conception de la vie philosophique, entre la rigueur de certains modeles antiques et la sagesse spontanee du cannibale ou du paysan. Ce recueil d'etudes tente de definir ce nouveau socratisme, en s'interrogeant a la fois sur son originalite et sur son caractere fondateur pour la modernite : le socratisme de Montaigne n'est-il pas tres proche du notre ? Et n'est-ce pas avec Montaigne que Socrate devient la figure tutelaire de la philosophie ?
