Le «seigneur aux lions» d’Amathonte
Étude d'iconographie et d'histoire des religions des statues trouvées sur l'agora

Unique tant par son iconographie que par la qualite de ses sculptures, l’ensemble statuaire mis au jour sur l’agora d’Amathonte pourrait etre un element cle de la religion du royaume d’Amathonte aux epoques archaique et classique. Les statues decouvertes representent toutes un personnage masculin aux proportions de nain: celui-ci arbore cependant tous les signes exterieurs du divin. Il paraOEt de plus etre en lien avec la royaute telle qu’elle etait concue a l’epoque archaique, ainsi que le laisse penser son attitude de maOEtre des lions. Une fois revue la datation des sculptures, c’est tout le processus d’elaboration de l’image du Seigneur aux lions d’Amathonte et les assimilations diverses dont ce dieu fit l’objet qui sont etudies ici. S’il est a nul autre pareil, ce Seigneur s’inscrit neanmoins bel et bien dans un vaste ensemble de dieux nains, grecs, egyptiens et proche-orientaux, souvent lies aux mines et a de puissantes deesses.
