S’il n’arrive pas, dit Socrate dans la Republique, que pouvoir politique et philosophie en viennent a coincider, il n’y aura pas de terme aux maux des cites et a ceux du genre humain. Pourquoi alors se mettre a la recherche du politique plutot qu’a celle du philosophe? Sans doute parce que, dans la Republique, une question restait en suspens : comment doit-il gouverner, ce philosophe? En fonction d’un savoir, mais qui soit politique et permette d’agir sur des realites en devenir. Agir, ce n’est pas reagir, c’est avoir la maitrise du temps et faire preuve d’une juste mesure qui n’est pas un juste milieu. Distinguee de l’art sophistique qui en a toujours usurpe le nom, la politique se trouve ainsi affranchie de la visee imperialiste de l’argent et du commerce, de la competence administrative et de la theologie traditionnelle. Voila qui donne a ce Dialogue une singuliere actualite. Mais encore faut-il faire coexister des hommes qui ne sont pas naturellement faits pour vivre ensemble. La politique n’est pas seulement depourvue de fondement naturel, elle n’a pas de fondement anthropologique : ce n’est donc pas un art a theoriser, c’est un art a inventer. L’Etranger d’Elee y reussit, sans pourtant nous dire ce qu’un politique doit etre. Quant a Socrate, apres le prologue, il ecoute et se tait. Que veut nous faire entendre ce silence, sinon que quelque chose manque?
