Des sophistes, on sait qu’ils furent des professeurs independants qui delivraient leur enseignement en echange d’un salaire, des intellectuels qui marquerent de leur influence les profondes mutations de la societe athenienne au cours de la seconde moitie du cinquieme siecle avant Jesus-Christ, des penseurs que Platon et Aristote presenterent comme des charlatans, les confinant ainsi, pour longtemps, en marge de la philosophie. Les sophistes sont des penseurs eminents qui se sont interesses au langage, a l’education, aux questions politiques et anthropologiques, aux problemes ontologiques, cosmologiques, epistemologiques, theologiques, sociaux et ethiques. Les positions qu’adoptent Platon sont une reponse aux interrogations philosophiques posees par les sophistes.
