Pourtant, ces differentes croyances se recouvraient suffisamment pour que l’on puisse parler de religion grecque . C’est de cette religion que Jan Bremmer dresse un tableau aux periodes archaique et classique. Il choisit une approche eclectique , sans pour autant renoncer aux controverses methodologiques. Les aspects sociologiques, anthropologiques et psychologiques sont tous abordes. L’ouvrage est concu a la fois comme une introduction historique et thematique. Il presente l’etat actuel de la recherche sur chacun des sujets traites et propose une abondante bibliographie. Publie en 1994 et traduit depuis en plusieurs langues, ce livre est desormais un classique parmi les etudes sur la religion grecque. Outre de nombreux addenda et une version remaniee du dernier chapitre, cette traduction comporte un appareil de notes mis a jour et doit donc etre consideree comme une nouvelle edition.
