Seule de son espece, cette piece singuliere prend pourtant tout son sens lorsqu'on la replace dans le cadre des rapports qui se tisserent au Moyen Age entre alchimie, religion et litterature, mais aussi dans le contexte medieval des messes parodiques et des messes votives. Sa reception a traverse les courants religieux les plus divers de la fin de la Renaissance, touchant tour a tour catholiques romains, lutheriens, antitrinitaires, disciples de Schwenckfeld ou de Paracelse. Leurs options religieuses ont-elles pu inflechir leur transmission de ce texte ? Cette question nous oriente vers un aspect encore peu connu de l'alchimie : sa capacite a se jouer des frontieres religieuses.
