Giappone, 1708. Il paese vive il tempo del sakoku: ogni contatto con gli stranieri (soprattutto se missionari cristiani) e proibito o rigidamente regolato. In un contesto di violenta persecuzione, il 12 ottobre 1708, uno straniero vestito da samurai sbarca furtivamente nell’isola di Yakushima. Il suo nome e Giovanni Battista Sidotti ed e un missionario italiano. Viene subito fermato e imprigionato: il suo destino e l’abiura o la condanna a morte. Ma accade qualcosa di inatteso: Hakuseki Arai, studioso confuciano e consigliere dello shogun, decide di interrogarlo di persona. Ne nasce un dialogo straordinario. La vita e risparmiata a Sidotti, senza che debba rinunciare alla sua fede, mentre Hakuseki, ispirato da quelle conversazioni, scrive importanti opere che gettano le basi della riapertura del Giappone. Sidotti muore in isolamento ma il suo sacrificio non e invano. Nel luglio 2014 i suoi resti sono stati ritrovati, la dove era stata la sua prigione, e riconosciuti grazie al DNA.
