In jedem Gefangnis befindet sich ein Raum, der fur religiose Feiern vorgesehen ist. Der Andachtsraum ist Teil der totalen Institution und gleichzeitig Raum religioser Praxis. Dieses Spannungsverhaltnis untersucht die Autorin und nimmt dabei vor allem den Raum als soziales Produkt in den Blick. Im Rekurs auf Erving Goffmans Interaktionstheorie wird die Totalitat sozialer Rollen im Strafvollzug herausgearbeitet sowie damit einhergehende Elemente einer subversiven Widerstandskultur. Vor diesem Horizont wird der Andachtsraum verstanden als institutionalisierter Raum der Widerstandskultur im Sinne einer Hinterbuhne, die temporare und partielle Rollenbefreiung ermoglicht. Der Andachtsraum erweist sich so als Ort der Aushandlungsprozesse von Freiheit im Raum des Gefangnisses.
