Contact is among the oldest and most pressing questions of human existence: physical, social, and interpersonal. The contributors to this volume explore how digital media are transforming contact from theological, philosophical, engineering-technological, ecclesial, and ethical perspectives.

The question of contact is among the oldest and, at the same time, most pressing questions of human existence. This conference volume brings together contributions dedicated to the question of (digital) contact in its theological, philosophical, engineering-technological, ecclesial, and ethical dimensions.
Digital media do not merely alter the form of transmission; they transform the quality of contact itself-its embodiment, its immediacy, its spiritual significance. In doing so, they touch upon genuinely theological questions, for theology has concerned itself from the very beginning with issues of mediation and presence. The doctrine of the Incarnation, sacramental theology, ecclesiology-all these theological topoi revolve around the fundamental question of how that which is beyond human control becomes accessible, how transcendence breaks into immanence, and how communion among human beings and between humanity and God comes into being and is sustained. Digital media do not simply confront these fundamental theological categories with new fields of application; they challenge and enrich them at their very core.
The first part of the volume approaches the concept of contact from the perspectives of systematic theology and engineering and technology studies. The second part examines the concept of contact from practical-theological and religious-educational perspectives. The third part is devoted to the socio-ethical dimensions of digital contact. The volume concludes with a practice-based report from the field of diaconal work.
