This interesting monograph deals with the divergent burial practices or else the “inappropriate burials” in the ancient world. In this sense, the main focus of the study is not the venerated deceased of the glowing world of antiquity, but, on the contrary, those that society was unwilling to remember: the bulk and anonymous victims of pandemics, wars, natural disasters, the deformed thrown as “waste” into the wells of cities, the executed convicts buried with shackles, but also the vindictive ghosts of the socially incomplete deceased, those who met a premature or violent death, etc.
This publication proposes a dialogue between Classical Archeology and Archeology of Death, Sociology, Anthropology, and Ethnology, in order to explore invisible and distorted aspects of the social systems of the pre-Christian past, and possible links with the successive Christian societies lying in the dark.
