Der in Gallien beheimatete Presbyter Johannes Cassianus (ca. 360 – 430) ist mit seinen vielgelesenen Werken De institutis coenobiorum sowie Collationes nicht nur einer der wichtigsten Zeugen des fruhen Monchtums, sondern nimmt auch dank seiner jahrelangen Aufenthalte in verschiedenen Klostern Agyptens und Palastinas in einzigartiger Weise eine Vermittlerrolle zwischen den unterschiedlichen monastischen Entwicklungen des griechischen Ostens und des lateinischen Westens ein: Sein Einfluss etwa auf die Regula Benedicti ist kaum zu uberschatzen. Das weniger bekannte Werk De incarnatione contra Nestorium wiederum ist eine Hauptquelle fur unsere Kenntnis der Schriften des Nestorius. Die Edition aller drei Werke durch Michael Petschenig 1886 (CSEL 13) und 1888 (CSEL 17) wurde seit ihrem Erscheinen zu Recht als hervorragende editorische Leistung gelobt und nahezu unverandert auch in neuere Ausgaben ubernommen. Der nun vorliegende Neudruck beider Bande bringt Prolegomena, Text und Apparat Petschenigs in unveranderter Form, wohingegen die Indices durch Streichung heute obsoleter Elemente ebenso wie durch Hinzufugung einer grossen Anzahl von Addenda insbesondere im Bereich der Similienstellen sowie durch Aufteilung auf die beiden Bande vollig neu und, wie zu hoffen ist, benutzerfreundlicher gestaltet werden konnten.
