Von Karl Barth zu einem “Naturereignis” und einem “religiosen Original und Kraftmenschen” erhoht; von Ferdinand Christian Baur fur seine “originellen Ideen” gelobt: Johann Tobias Beck (1804-1878) nahm eine widerspruchliche Sonderstellung im theologischen Kosmos jener Zeit ein. Er vertrat eine bemerkenswerte Allianz aus konservativem Schriftverstandnis und unkonventionellem Auftreten. Ungeachtet jedes Titels, jeder Stellung und jedes Namens waren alle Menschen fur ihn zuallererst eines, namlich Empfanger der erziehenden Gnade Gottes; einzig die Schrift dabei als Orientierung, als “Leuchte” in der Finsternis. Der Band findet seinen Schwerpunkt in Kirchen- und Theologiegeschichte, weist dabei jedoch auch Einflusse der Materialen Dogmatik und der Praktischen Theologie auf. Als eine solche Gesamtdarstellung fullt die vorliegende Arbeit eine Lucke in der Beck-Forschung.
