Fast drei Jahrzehnte nach Johann Crugers (1598-1662) Tod erschien mit der Editio XXIV. von 1690 die einzige vierstimmig ausgefuhrte der vielen Praxid Pietatis Melica-Ausgaben, besorgt durch den Berliner Stadtmusiker Jacob Hintze (1622-1702). Die Mehrzahl der Kompositionen sind Bearbeitungen alterer Cruger-Satze aus anderen Gesangbuch-Drucken durch Hintze und offenbar lag ihm auch Crugers Nachlass vor. Die beiden standen kurzzeitig in Verbindung; und der Nicolai-Kantor hat den Stadtmusiker offenbar geschatzt. In der Edition sind die teils erheblichen Mangel bis hin zu schwersten Fehlern sehenden Auges ubernommen worden und dokumentiert, spiegelt sich in ihnen doch die lebhafte Geschichte des Bestandes wider, seine Einschatzung durch den jungeren Hintze und das Miteinander der beiden Komponisten. So vermittelt der Band einen zusammenfassenden Eindruck des Praxid Pietatis Melica-Projektes; der Kompositionszyklus wird hier erstmals geschlossen vorgelegt.
