Religion has regained the attention of the public because in modern societies it is perceived as being an opportunity for solidarity as well as a risk for social cohesion. Experts from the research group ‘Religion und gesellschaftliche Integration in Europa’ (REGIE), religion and social integration in Europe, at the University of Lucerne are examining the effects and correlations from an interdisciplinary perspective. A first conference held in June 2012 was dedicated to surveying the current state of the discussions which are described in this volume: issues included are the power of religion to integrate, the integrative effect of religious traditions, integration conflicts within communities and aspects of the law.
