English summary: There are a number of fascinating things which a visitor to an Egyptian museum can encounter, which can be the image itself, the text contained within an image, or the translation of the text which the visitor may not know or needs help reading, and finally it is the world of ancient Egypt itself that the visitor encounters as an unfamiliar place that usually required some explanation or clarification. The varying range of objects held by the Egyptian Museum Georg Steindorff at the University of Leipzig are presented in this book, and they range in date from c. 2400 BCE to the 8th century AD. The objects cover a large part of Egyptian history in which hieroglyphs and older forms of writing, including alphabetically written Coptic, went through numerous changes. This book presents hieroglyphic inscriptions on stele and sarcophagi, charms on amulets and textbooks, business contracts and debt notices in hieratic script, and even examples of Mesopotamian cuneiform writing as a way to open up new perspectives on daily life in ancient Egypt in its complexity and variety. Following a brief introduction on the history of the collection in the Leipzig museum, fifteen experts offer direct translations of texts dealing with religion, daily life, ancient Egyptian law as well as the origin and use of the objects on which the texts were found. With the interpretive explanations, numerous color photographs and sketches, an extensive glossary and description of the literature, this book offers a critical introduction to daily life and culture in Egypt, which has fascinated people from ancient times to the modern day.
