Gli antichi attribuivano grande importanza alla prole e amavano i loro figli; valutavano pero negativamente l’infanzia, imputandole ignoranza, mancanza di raziocinio, incapacita di autodominio e, soprattutto, incompiutezza. Il cristianesimo delle origini, nato in ambiente semitico e presto diffusosi nel mondo greco-romano, condivise sostanzialmente l’opinione corrente. Tuttavia, il ricordo di un Gesu attorniato dai bambini, feste in onore di piccoli martiri, una predicazione sempre piu interessata al valore salvifico dell’infantia Christi suggerirono una diversa considerazione per la prima eta, che comincio ad essere apprezzata per le sue specifiche peculiarita.
