Questo volume affronta, tra storia e memoria, un tema poco trattato: i rapporti tra i socialisti e il sindacato nel secondo dopoguerra, identificandoli secondo due linee teoriche, “culture sindacali di famiglia” e “culture contigue”. Le prime, di cui furono interpreti i socialisti del Psi, furono rappresentate dal revisionismo sindacale di Fernando Santi e Riccardo Lombardi, dalla sinistra “unitaria” che ebbe in Morandi la sua massima espressione e dalla sinistra “operaista” di Raniero Panzieri. Parte della “famiglia socialista” e anche la corrente socialdemocratica della Uil, i cui esponenti confluiscono nel 1966 nel Partito socialista unificato (Psu): e questa la corrente alla quale Giorgio Benvenuto seppe dare identita sindacale e dignita culturale. Le “culture contigue” alla famiglia socialista, qui identificate e studiate nelle loro diverse declinazioni, vanno dalla Fim-Cisl di Pierre Carniti alle Acli di Livio Labor.
