Der Band betrachtet Bevolkerungswissenschaft und Bevolkerungspolitik erstmals aus regionalgeschichtlicher Perspektive. Im Mittelpunkt steht der ethnisch und kulturell vielgestaltige Raum zwischen Brenner und Gardasee: das uberwiegend deutschsprachige Sudtirol und der fast ausschliesslich italienischsprachige Trentino. Gestutzt auf transnationale, komparatistische und multidisziplinare Ansatze, widmet sich das Buch der jungeren Bevolkerungsgeschichte dieses 1918 an Italien gefallenen mitteleuropaischen Grenz- und Ubergangsraumes. Es bietet einen Uberblick uber dessen demografische Entwicklung in der von zahlreichen Bruchen gekennzeichneten Zeit zwischen der Spatphase der Habsburgermonarchie bis zu den Zuwanderungsbewegungen des beginnenden 21. Jahrhunderts. Vor dem Hintergrund nationaler und internationaler Kontexte rekonstruiert es Vorstellungen von Bevolkerung als Gegenstand von Wissenschaft und Politik und untersucht die Planung und Umsetzung von Interventionen zur Neuordnung von Raum und Bevolkerung.
