Die Monografie untersucht, inwiefern sich Figuren in Tragodien Shakespeares den ‘heroic plays’ der Restaurationszeit (Davenant, Dryden, Lee, Otway, Rowe) und den ‘domestic tragedies’ des 18. Jahrhunderts (Hill, Howard, Lillo, Moore) als kontinuierlich bestehende Entitaten wahrnehmen lassen oder inwieweit diese Wahrnehmung durch bestimmte Faktoren gestort und bedroht wird. Dabei wird gezeigt, dass sich das tragische Moment der Dramen aus den Schwierigkeiten der Protagonisten ergibt, sich an veranderte Interaktions- und Selbstwahrnehmungsmodelle anzupassen. In den Tragodien konnen somit die Probleme sichtbar gemacht werden, die aus der gesellschaftlich bedingten Loslosung von tradierten Identitatsentwurfen und Interaktionsparadigmen resultieren. Zugleich macht die Studie sichtbar, in welchem Masse sich mit dem Wandel von Identitatsentwurfen und den sich daraus fur die Protagonisten ergebenden Konflikten auch Struktur und thematische Ausrichtung der Tragodien verandern.
