A conference at the Philipp University of Marburg in 2011 addressed the significance of Detlev Fehling’s still influential monograph “Die Quellenangaben bei Herodot” (the quoting of sources in the work of Herodotus) published in 1971 for the purposes of both current and future research. Leading representatives of Herodotus research from different disciplines analyze Fehling’s contribution in the corresponding anthology, thereby providing not only a synthesis of the current debate on Herodotus’ sources, but also an important starting point for future research on the father of historiography. German text.
English summary: Against the backdrop of developments since September 11th, 2001 and the resulting military conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and other parts of the world, Herodotus, the father of historiography, has gained unexpected topical significance as the historian of the Persian Wars. However, his reliability as a historian had already been controversial back in ancient times and it has been much debated, especially since the last third of the 20th century.
