As part of his large and encyclopaedic literary output, Gregory Bar ‘Ebroyo (d. 1286), maphrian and polymath of the Syrian Orthodox Church (d. 1286) wrote the Chronicle, a universal history, running from the Creation until the author’s own lifetime. It is divided into a civil ()Chronography) and an ecclesiastical (Ecclesiastical History) part. An invaluable source for the history of the Medieval Syrian Orthodox Church and of the Church of the East, the Ecclesiastical History has so far been available only via the 19th century edition of J.B. Abbeloos and T. Lamy, which is basically a diplomatic reproduction of a 16th century manuscript. This volume offers a critical edition and translation of the Ecclesiastical History. The introduction gives an overview of the reception of the Ecclesiastical History and the description of the manuscripts used for the edition, it details the interrelation between the manuscripts and the construction of the stemma.
