Giovan Francesco Pico, philosopher and innovator of Pyrrhonian skepticism, actively supported the witch hunt in Mirandola (1523), defending it in Strix sive de ludificatione daemonum. This humanistic dialogue, while steeped in classical culture, rejects its legacy as a source of witchcraft heresy. The essays analyze Pico’s original demonology, its impact on the trials in Emilia, and the spread of the Strix, the first text on the subject written in the vernacular, presenting Mirandola as the culmination of the 16th-century Italian debate on witchcraft.
