In his historical records, Herodotus of Halicarnassus not only describes conflicts between the Greek world and the barbarians of the East, but he also illustrates the history of the main centers of Asian power and their leaders. In the role of the historian, he presents his material from a perspective that in terms of its content and structure is based primarily on the succession of the five great generations of kings of the Lydian and Persian Empire. In his study, Johannes Brehm focuses mainly on the analysis of the succession of rulers based on critical reflection on the possible meanings of the key term “generation” and the question of its theoretical applicability in Classical Philology. Brehm thereby evokes a differentiated picture of intergenerational relationships in Herodotus’ historical records which, following an approach from a mainly literary studies perspective, takes into account both questions and conclusions resulting from research into ancient history. German text.
