Delos, the sacred island of Apollo, was one of the great religious centres of the ancient world. From the 19th century onwards, excavations by the French School of Athens revealed a cosmopolitan city where the sanctuaries of the Greek gods coexisted with those of ‘foreign’ gods, hailing from across the Mediterranean. This unique concentration of religious establishments makes Delos an exceptional observatory for analyzing the relationships the Ancients maintained with their gods. This documentation, of unrivalled richness and easily accessible, has surprisingly remained marginal in major syntheses on Greek religion. This book aims to fill this gap by proposing a theoretical approach to divine worship and its infrastructure on Delos. Worship is defined here as the interaction between humans and the gods, through various means (encounters, exchanges of all kinds, production, privations…) all of which are susceptible to being shaped by technique. At the crossroads of archaeology and anthropology, this study thus seeks to characterise the ‘fabrication of the divine’ at Delos: a world where the gods are not merely venerated, but installed, nourished, summoned – made present through technology.
