Con il Capitolo di Pentecoste del 1217 inizia la vicenda missionaria del nascente Ordine francescano. Guidati da frate Elia da Cortona, alcuni frati furono inviati “oltremare” come testimoni di fraternita e di pace per fondare una nuova Provincia francescana (l’odierna Custodia di Terra Santa). Due anni dopo, nel 1219, e lo stesso Francesco a recarsi nella citta di Damietta, in Egitto, assediata dai crociati. Qui incontrera il sultano al-Malik al-Kamil e probabilmente otterra un salvacondotto per poter visitare per la prima volta i Luoghi Santi. Le linee guida indicate da Francesco per la missione dei frati sono semplici: prima la testimonianza di vita e poi l’annuncio esplicito del Vangelo. Da allora, fino ad oggi, seguendo queste indicazioni i frati della Custodia hanno vissuto accanto alle popolazioni di Terra Santa, aperto la strada ai pellegrini, fondato scuole e opere sociali, subendo spesso anche persecuzioni e sofferenze.
