English summary: Europe is made up of all the traditions in philosophy, religion, science, art and literature whose origins rest in the Greek and Roman antiquity. Although antiquity marks the start of the development of European identity, it is present in all periods of European history. At first, the modern world appears to attempt to engage the cultural achievements of antiquity through imitation but also the discovery of its paths takes place in an ongoing conflict with the Old World: modernity always defines itself through a retrospective on antiquity. We are only able to be good Europeans, if we have an understanding of antiquity, which is the example or counterpoint of the current state of the modern. The contributions in this work, “Europe between Antiquity and the Modern,” are derived from fields of philosophy, literary studies, and philology, and offer as a unifying theme a variety of European perspectives that imply looking back is also a way to look forward.
