Les peintres et les sculpteurs n’ont pas toujours occupe la meme place dans la societe : conditions de travail, statut juridique, encadrement institutionnel, position hierarchique, fortune, mode de vie, notoriete, criteres d’excellence, et meme caractere ou aspect physique ont considerablement change au cours des siecles, du Moyen Age a aujourd’hui.C’est l’ensemble de ces differentes caracteristiques qui forme leur statut : celui-ci englobe donc non seulement les conditions materielles de leur activite, mais aussi les representations qui y sont associees, ainsi que la dimension symbolique des significations du mot artiste . Cette investigation releve donc autant d’une anthropologie de la notion d’artiste que d’une sociologie ou d’une histoire sociale de l’art.
