The dominant conceptions of ethics as a rational reason for general moral standards are limited and miss the point. Michael U. Braunschweig shows that ethics is a hermeneutic discipline primarily concerned with understanding moral thinking and human beings as moral beings.

Braunschweig arbeitet diese zentrale These in Diskussion mit sowohl kontinentaleuropaischen als auch angelsachsischen Kritikern der begrundungstheoretischen orientierten Ethikkonzeptionen der Moderne heraus. Im Gesprach mit Wittgenstein, Gadamer, Diamond und McDowell erkennt er als Zentrum ethischen Denkens den hermeneutisch sensiblen Umgang mit der Sprache, die nicht nur ein Werkzeug fur Informationsvermittlung ist, sondern Lebenswelten, Existenzweisen und Praxisfelder erschliesst und moralisch bedeutsam macht. Kierkegaards Taten der Liebe werden als eine solche hermeneutische Liebesethik gedeutet, die als pragmatische Einweisung in ein Leben und eine Praxis der Liebe nicht auf aussere Begrundung angewiesen ist, sondern ihre Orientierung in sich tragt. Als geistgeleitete Ethik ist sie sowohl theologisch wie philosophisch anschlussfahig.
