Emotionen haben in der Ethik keinen leichten Stand. Oft werden sie nur als Storfaktoren einer moralisch angemessenen Wahrnehmung thematisiert; ihre positive Bedeutung liege allenfalls darin, moralisches Handeln zu motivieren. Problematisch ist das dabei vorausgesetzte Verstandnis von Objektivitat, aber auch die strikte Trennung kognitiver und affektiver Vermogen: Wenn man Emotionen als gehaltvolle Wahrnehmungen der Realitat versteht, dann konnen sie die konkrete Art und Weise sein, die moralische Bedeutung von Situationen zu erfassen. Aus der Perspektive einer christlichen Ethik und im Anschluss u.a. an Einsichten des spaten Wittgenstein, Stanley Cavells und Cora Diamonds arbeitet Ammann die Bedeutung von Emotionen fur moralisches Handeln und ethisches Nachdenken heraus. Er integriert dabei auch Einsichten aus Psychologie und Psychoanalyse.
