Domestic Trade and Maritime Trade in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Ancient Near East
Proceedings of the 10th Melammu Workshop, TRANSMARE Institute Trier, 11–13 December 2019
Edited by Christoph Schafer Edited by Patrick Reinard
Research into the interconnectedness and transfer of people, economic goods, and cultural assets from a broad chronological and thematic perspective is one of the main interests of both the Melammu Project and the TRANSMARE Institute (Trier). Chronologically, this volume brings together 15 contributions from the Ancient Near East period to modern times, with the main focus on the Greco-Roman era. Geographically, it spans the western Mediterranean region, Italy, Greece, Egypt, the ancient Orient, India, and the Far East. The contributions discuss among others the political and economic connections between Ashkelon and Egypt (E. Gaß), domestic and maritime trade in Xenophon’s works (S. Günther), the role of Parthia in maritime trade in the Indian Ocean (L. Gregoratti), papyri and ostraca from Greco-Roman Egypt as documents of ancient maritime and economic history (J. Lehn / P. Reinard), and shipwrecks from antiquity to the present day (St. Berke).
