Macht Ding Zeit? Ding macht Zeit!
Old artefacts and unique objects not only surround us in everyday life; they also populate our past. In this anthology, scholars from the fields of Egyptology, archaeology, Byzantine studies, medieval German studies, Latin studies, Scandinavian studies and theology examine the strategies involved in the material representation of the past – how are objects used to construct history, produce knowledge, create identity and meaning, and narrate memory? What power interests do narrators and rulers pursue in order to materialise their respective versions of history? The contributions reveal answers ranging from Ancient Egypt to the early modern period, exploring landscapes and architecture, as well as literary and textile artefacts.
