Das Buch prasentiert ein historisch-organologisches Sprachkonzept mit Betonung der kognitiven, expressiven und axiologischen Funktion als ontologische Grundlage der menschlichen Sprache. Damit ist es ein Gegenentwurf zu instrumentalistischen und intentionalistischen Sprachauffassungen. Werkzeugcharakter der Sprache und Arbitraritat des Sprachzeichens stehen nicht an der Wiege der Sprache, sondern entstehen sekundar im Ergebnis des umfassenden Funktionswandels, der auch den Wandel der “Sprachsubstanz” bedingt. Die Geschichte der Sprache wird als Einheit von ursprunglicher Transparenz bei Nomination, Deixis und Kategorisierung und sich spater herausbildender Idiosynkrasie in allen Sprachebenen gesehen.
