Im vorliegenden Buch wird eine im Oktober 2020 im Mainzer Zollhafen gefundene, leicht unterlebensgrosse Frauenfigur mit nacktem Oberkorper und Huftmantel aus Sandstein bekannt gemacht. Die auf dem Sockel angebrachte Inschrift weist sie als Salus aus. Gemeinsam mit einer Skulptur aus Koln bildet die Mainzer Salus ein den lokalen Bedurfnissen angepasstes Statuenschema, dessen Entstehung in flavischer Zeit vermutet und mit einem damals neu gestifteten Kult in Verbindung gebracht wird. Die Statue steht paradigmatisch fur eine grosse Zahl qualitatsvoller romischer Statuen, mit denen ambitionierte Auftraggeber:innen in Obergermanien ihre Stadte mit im offentlichen Raum prasentierten Statuenstiftungen von unterschiedlichen Heilsgottheiten ausstatteten.
English summary: In October 2020, archaeologists made a sensational discovery in the Mainz customs harbour: a slightly smaller than life-size female figure with a naked upper body and hip coat made of sandstone, which is headless but otherwise excellently preserved and is one of the best Roman sculptures found in Germany in recent decades. It is also extraordinary that the statue has survived unbroken on its plinth with inscription. Several specialists from different research institutions have joined forces to carry out comprehensive research into the statue.
