English summary: The Konigliche Hofbibliothek (Royal Library) in Berlin was constructed in 1774 – 84 during the reign of Fredrick II. With its baroque facade, which cites the Michaelertrakt in Vienna, the building is regarded as anachronistic within the classicist ensemble of the Forum Fridericianum. The book illuminates the architectural history from the construction in Prussian Berlin to the 20th century. It focusses on the tensions between the unchanging facade and the consistently modified interior of the building – whose architecture of today is post-war modern. Thus, the building connects ever since traditionalist past with forward-looking architectural movements.
