In the history of state and church in Germany, hardly any other document has caused as much controversy as the Reichskonkordat. This study focuses on the question of which discourses on the delimitation of the spheres of influence and power of state and church were sparked. Based on new sources, the study takes the first comprehensive look at the history of the Reichskonkordat from the Weimar Republic to the divided Germany. It thus makes a significant contribution to contemporary church history, which can hardly be understood without these discussions.
In der Geschichte von Staat und Kirche in Deutschland hat wohl kaum ein Dokument so viele Kontroversen ausgelost wie das Reichskonkordat. Bis heute bildet der am 20. Juli 1933 zwischen dem Heiligen Stuhl und dem nationalsozialistischen Deutschen Reich geschlossene Volkerrechtsvertrag die Grundlage der Beziehungen. Der Vertrag war allerdings schon unter den Zeitgenossen umstritten, galt er vielen doch als ‘Teufelspakt’. Im Zentrum der Studie steht die Frage, welche Diskurse um die Abgrenzung der Einfluss- und Machtspharen von Staat und Kirche sich am Reichskonkordat entzundeten. Auf Grundlage neuer Quellen wirft die Untersuchung erstmals einen umfassenden Blick auf die Geschichte des Reichskonkordates von der Weimarer Republik bis ins geteilte Deutschland. Sie leistet damit einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur kirchlichen Zeitgeschichte, ist diese doch ohne die Diskussionen um das Konkordat kaum zu verstehen.
