Die katholische Kirche ist von Vielfalt gepragt. Durch ihr Handeln und Sprechen verhalten sich katholische Glaubige notwendig zu dieser Vielfalt und positionieren sich innerhalb und zu ihr. Die vorliegende Studie erforscht diese Positionierungsprozesse. Es wird untersucht, welche Bedeutung Erfahrungen von innerkirchlicher Vielfalt fur Katholik:innen, fur ihr Selbstbild und ihr Selbstverstandnis als Glaubige haben, d.h. fur ihre religiose Identitat. Als Beispiel und theologischer Entdeckungsort fur das Erleben innerkirchlicher Vielfalt dienen Begegnungen in und Erfahrungen mit mehreren Ortskirchen weltweit. Im Ergebnis stellt die qualitative Interviewstudie einen empirisch begrundeten Begriff religioser Identitat zur Verfugung. Die Analyse der Interviews zeigt, dass innerkirchliche Vielfalt die Konstruktion religioser Identitat ermoglicht und fordert. Sie fordert Glaubige zu individuellen religiosen Positionierungen heraus und stosst religiose Identitatskonstruktionsprozesse an. In diesen Prozessen zeigt sich religiose Identitat als dynamisches Phanomen, das oft uneindeutig erscheint: Religiose Identitat wird durch immer wieder neue Positionierungen in vielfaltigen, widerspruchlichen religiosen Zusammenhangen ausgehandelt. Dabei nimmt das Umfeld der Befragten eine zentrale Rolle im Identitatskonstruktionsprozess ein.
