This study examines on the basis of the discussion about the understanding of Vatican II as “Pastoral Council” three selected conflicts with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith: the Christological approaches of Edward Schillebeeckx, Jon Sobrino and Jacques Dupuis. This is done from the perspective of how the respective approach was developed in dealing with its context and its particular challenges.
