Marcus Porcius Cato, dit Caton l’Ancien ou Caton le Censeur (234-149 av. J.-C.), presente dans nos sources l’image severe du Romain intransigeant, fidele aux valeurs traditionnelles. L’une des facettes essentielles de cette image est son attitude a l’egard des Grecs et de leur culture, si bien que Caton passe habituellement pour un adversaire acharne de l’hellenisme et de son influence jugee nefaste pour la culture et les valeurs romaines. Ce topos vehicule par les sources antiques a ete abondamment repris par l’historiographie moderne qui souligne volontiers l'”antihellenisme” de Caton. C’est ce lieu commun et les debats qu’il a engendres que cet ouvrage collectif ambitionne d’explorer. Les rapports entre Caton et l’hellenisme sont en fait complexes et n’ont rien a voir avec un simple “antihellenisme primaire”. Son attitude a l’egard de l’hellenisme est d’abord un fait d’histoire sociale et culturelle qui exprime le systeme de valeurs non d’un individu isole, fut-il exceptionnel, ni d’une classe sociale ou d’un groupe politique particulier, mais d’une large partie du corps civique romain. L’image d’un Caton visceralement oppose a l’hellenisme ou a l’hellenisation de la societe romaine de son temps fut partiellement construite par Caton lui-meme et fut nourrie par la suite d’un regard sur le passe qui opposait la Republique “aux moeurs pures” des IVe-IIIe siecles a la Republique “degeneree” du dernier siecle av. J.-C. Les moralistes et l’historiographie modernes, en preservant, en partie inconsciemment, cette perception de l’histoire romaine, contribuerent a faire de Caton l’ennemi irreductible d’une culture grecque qui aurait contribue a mener la Republique romaine a sa perte. Cet ouvrage s’efforce de deconstruire cette image simplificatrice, produit d’une maturation pluriseculaire et d’une vision morale de l’histoire, pour redonner a Caton l’Ancien la profondeur et la complexite qui caracterisent tout homme politique de son envergure.
