In the late Middle Ages, anyone who wanted to keep his estates and economic privileges when he was naturalized in a city became a prisoner, a sentence or a pact citizen. The naturalization treaty was called Burgrecht in the Upper German area and used for nobility, monasteries, Jews, rural communities and even for the mutual naturalization of entire municipalities. As a result, castle rights developed into political contracts that could become both an instrument of urban territorialization and the seizure of urban politics by monasteries and nobility. Based on case studies from the 13th to the 15th century, the study shows how directly and profoundly castle rights shaped politics, society and conflicts in the study area and how dynamically the actors handled the treaties.

German Description: Geding-, Satz- oder Paktburger wurde im Spatmittelalter, wer seine standischen und wirtschaftlichen Sonderrechte bei der Einburgerung in einer Stadt behalten wollte. Der Einburgerungsvertrag wurde im oberdeutschen Raum als Burgrecht bezeichnet und fur Adel, Kloster, Juden, Landgemeinden und sogar zur gegenseitigen Einburgerung ganzer Stadtgemeinden verwendet. Dadurch entwickelten sich die Burgrechte zu politischen Vertragen, die sowohl zum Instrument stadtischer Territorialisierung, als auch zur Vereinnahmung stadtischer Politik durch Kloster und Adel werden konnten. Die Studie zeigt anhand von Fallbeispielen des 13. bis 15. Jahrhunderts im schweizerischen Raum, wie direkt und tiefgreifend Burgrechte die Politik, Gesellschaft und Konflikte im Untersuchungsraum pragten und wie dynamisch die Akteure mit den Vertragen umgingen.
