Um Konrad Justinger, den ersten Berner Chronisten, ranken sich viele Mythen und Hypothesen. Erstmals unterzieht die Studie die Quellen zu Justingers Leben und Werk – darunter auch Neuentdeckungen – der schon lange falligen kritischen Prufung und legt neue, zum Teil unerwartete Erkenntnisse uber Justingers Herkunft, Lehrzeit und Karriere vor. Konrad Justinger ist aber keineswegs nur fur die bernische Geschichtsschreibung von Bedeutung, sondern fur die spatmittelalterliche Stadtchronistik im ganzen deutschen Sprachgebiet. In einem zweiten Teil widmet sich die Studie dem Konzept von Justingers amtlicher Berner Chronik, die eines der ersten und schonsten Beispiele stadtischer Geschichtsschreibung im suddeutschen Raum darstellt.
